Who Are We?
The Southern African Show Poultry Organisation (SASPO) is dedicated to promoting and preserving the standard-bred poultry industry across Southern Africa. SASPO works to “foster and promote the breeding of standard breed poultry,” and serves as a regulatory body for show standards, judging, and breed development. It establishes and supports poultry shows “under the By-Laws and Rules of the Organisation,” maintaining a unified community of exhibitors, clubs, and junior breeders. The organisation also functions as a coordinating authority for recognised poultry events and exhibitor achievements.
Our Mission
SASPO's mission, as defined in its Constitution, is to “encourage and protect poultry shows as being the show window of our industry, and education for both breeder and public,” and to promote the “practical value of standard-bred poultry and pure breeding” especially among junior members. Through the establishment of recognised show clubs, judging examinations, and educational resources, SASPO supports the ongoing development of breeders and aims to uphold a “high standard of conduct at all shows.” Members gain points and recognition through participation in SASPO-approved shows, leading toward prestigious awards like the Master Exhibitor status
Our Vision
SASPO envisions being “the foremost authority in standard-bred poultry exhibition and breeding across Southern Africa,” fostering a tradition of excellence rooted in integrity and education. As outlined in its objectives, SASPO commits to “constantly endeavour to maintain a high standard of judging and exhibits at shows, ” while also “co-operating with other organisations whenever such action would improve the standard of shows and competitions, judges or breeds”. This vision includes empowering youth, protecting the poultry fancy against adverse legislation, and ensuring the continued growth of the industry through innovation, outreach, and high ethical standards.
Ex Avibus Cohortalibus Gaudium
The Latin phrase “Ex Avibus Cohortalibus Gaudium”, meaning “From Show Birds, Joy,” captures the heart of SASPO’s vision: that fulfillment, pride, and education are derived through the breeding, showing, and appreciation of standard-bred poultry. This motto reflects the spirit outlined in the SASPO Constitution promoting excellence in breeding, supporting junior involvement, and uniting communities around the shared enthusiasm for poultry exhibitions. Rooted in the goals of encouraging proper breeding, fostering youth education, and celebrating competitive achievement, this phrase serves as a reminder that SASPO is not only about standards it’s about joy, tradition, and passion nurtured through the art of poultry showing.
